April 2007 Washington Wine Club
2004 Betz Family Winery, Bordeaux Releases
This is getting to be a pattern. We’ve been featuring the new
Betz releases several springs running, but we sure haven’t heard anyone
complaining. Master of Wine, Bob Betz, continues to craft well-balanced,
age-worthy wines, year after year, and those of you who’ve been in the club for a
while should have a pretty impressive vertical going by now. We only got
two cases of each of these, so there is only a tiny bit left. The winery
is completely sold out. We should be getting a few magnums of each in
pretty soon, though, so keep your eyes open for those.
The 2004 Clos de Betz is
60% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petite Verdot and
4% Malbec sourced from four different AVAs: Red Mountain, Horse Heaven, Yakima
Valley and Frenchman Hills. This is a richer, more serious wine than past
releases and could be the most ageworthy Clos de Betz yet. The little bit
left is $37.25.
The 2004 Père de Famille
is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 8% Merlot, 3% Petite Verdot and 2% Cabernet
Franc, all sourced from Red Mountain (Ciel du Cheval and Klipsun Vineyards) and
the Horse Heaven Hills (Alder Ridge Vineyard). It will cellar well for
years to come. This one is $49.75.
