November 2004 Washington Wine of the Month
Betz Family Vineyards Syrah
Yahoo! We got enough for the club!
We got just enough of the two 2002 Betz Syrahs to fill the club, plus a couple of
magnums. The fruit for the La Serenne comes from the Boushey vineyard outside
of Grandview; it makes the wilder of the two Syrahs, with a meaty, gamey flavor
that´s very rich - and clearly Syrah. It´ll hold in your cellar for
at least five years. The second Syrah, La Cote Rousse, comes from two vineyards
on Red Mountain: Kiona Vineyard (65%), and Hedges Vineyard (35%). As one might
expect from Red Mountain fruit, it´s big, and somewhat tannic. I´d
definitely hold this for a while - up to eight years. Enjoy! They were
both $41.50 while our brief stock lasted!
