February 2004 Washington Wine of the Month
2001 Basel Cellars Merriment
Shh! Don´t let anyone know you got this! Winemaker Trey Busch,
formerly Eric Dunham´s assistant at Dunham Cellars, didn´t let this wine
out to retail. Only restaurant and his mailing list had any access to it.
It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc - the
classic Bordeaux blend. It is HUGE, as you´d expect from this rising
Walla Walla star. It is an absolute powerhouse, and it´s ready to drink.
And it´s good. And gone. Enjoy it. It was $48.00.
2002 Masset Winery Reserve Syrah
From a new and very small winery in Yakima, winemaker Greg Masset produced this gem.
He produced an incredibly small amount of it, around 25 cases (exclusive enough
for you?), and, when I tried it a while back, I couldn´t believe the price for
this elegant wine was only $27.00. While it certainly can be consumed now,
it´ll easily hold up to five years, and possibly more. Enjoy!
