November 2005 Specialty Club
Devin
You know, I´m absolutely at a loss as to what to say about this wine.
This wine was made as a memorial to winemaker Devin Tuuri-Derby, late winemaker of
Spring Valley Vineyards. The wine for it, eight barrels worth, was donated by eight of
the best wineries in Walla Walla Valley. It was made at Dunham Cellars.
It´s 70% Syrah, and the wine is, as you´d guess, absolutely spectacular. The proceeds
from it benefit Devin´s wife and son. We´re selling it at $60.00, which is $5.00 over
our cost, as we don´t really feel comfortable profiting from it. Somewhat obviously,
we can´t apply a discount to it! I´m planning on having this wine for my Thanksgiving
dinner, although it´ll certainly hold for several years. 199 cases were made, and I
think we can get a bit more.
2002 Huber Gruner Veltliner Alte Setzen
Gruner Veltliner is such a lovely, complex grape that it´s a bit tough for me to figure why it
doesn´t sell all that well. This wine knocked me out when I tried it not too long ago,
and when I found out that only one case had come to Seattle, it was an easy call to put it
into this club. The "bang-for-your-buck" factor is also somewhat impressive -
it´s all of $23.50. Not bad for this good a wine!
