April 2005 Specialty Club
2000 Clerico Barolo "Pajana"
This one is massive. It receives ridiculously high scores.
It´s made in miniscule quantities. It´s from a great year. All these are
reasons why I picked this wine for this club this month. There´s not much around, and it
was $78.00. I´d put this away for ten years - at least. Barolo (made from the
Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy) is one of the most age-worthy wines in
the world; it combines what for me is the holy grail of wines, elegance and power, into one
fascinating whole. If you´ve not guessed, Barolo is one of my favorite wines, and
Domenico Clerico is one of the best producers.
2004 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc
It´s got the reputation of being the world´s greatest Sauvignon
Blanc. I don´t know about that (Didier Daguenau might argue as well), but it is
amazingly good. It´s also getting harder to get our hands on enough to go around, so
I´d rather be certain that the members of this club get enough! We do have a bit more
around at $26.00 and yes, if you do the math these two wines together slightly exceed the maximum
price we set on the club. So we´re running ‘em at a combined special total of $90.00.
After all, it IS our tenth anniversary this month!
