February 2005 Specialty Club
2002 Boudreaux Cabernet Sauvignon
Ah - this is spectacular wine. No other way, really, to put it.
It´s a big Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon from Walla
Walla´s justly famed Seven Hills Vineyard, with most of the
fruit being pulled from some of the oldest blocks in the vineyard -
fruit that usually goes into such wines as Leonetti. Only 80
cases of this wine were produced by winemaker (and Dobro player
supreme) Rob Newsom, and we´re lucky enough to get a good chunk
of it for $39.75. It´ll hold in your cellar for five years
or more. Should you be tempted to drink it young, do decant and
give it some time. Have something big, red, and meaty waiting
for dinner. Or just enjoy the wine by itself; that´s what
I did.
2003 Domaine des Aubuisieres Cuvee Alexandre Vouvray
Bernard Fouquet is one of my favorite winemakers in the Loire Valley.
He insists on biodynamic viticulture (think organic plus).
I know I put one of his wines in the December club, and I really
don´t like to repeat myself at all - not to mention within this
short a space of time - but when our old friend and importer of this
wine, Matt Mabus, came by with an open sample for me to try and the
news that the Northwest got all of five (count ‘em, 5) cases of M.
Fouquet´s premium cuvee (and the only one that blends his
different vineyards together), I really couldn´t resist.
This Chenin Blanc wine will hold for at least ten years, probably
longer - much longer. It´s beautiful and elegant now, and
will only improve. It is $59.75. Based on my tasting
sample, it is incredible.
