July 2004 Specialty Club
2001 Nicholas Cole Cellars Claret
Winemaker Mike Neuffer (ably abetted by Andrew Will winemaker Chris Camarda) have
crafted a powerhouse out of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.
It´s huge and thick; less than 400 cases were made at $45.00 per bottle.
It´s pretty much ready to drink, although it´s not going to go bad on
you in a couple year´s time! There´s also a second label called
Graeagle, which is a heck of a buy.
2002 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis Premier Cru "La
Forest"
2002 was a heck of a year for the Kimmeridgian Chain, that collection of dead oyster
shells that stretches from the White Cliffs of Dover through north-central France.
Just about every appellation on it (Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, parts of Champagne,
Chablis) had outstanding vintages. This wine has everything a good Chablis
should have: great acidity, beautiful minerality (a common term is "gunflint
"), an incredible and unique expression of Chardonnay fruit, and outstanding
aging ability. It´s $35.00, and we´ve a tiny bit left around.
