May 2006 Collector´s Club
2003 Betz Family Winery Clos de Betz
This wine is 59% Merlot, 30 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot,
and 5% Cabernet Franc (how DO they get these percentages accurate?), with the fruit
coming mostly from Red Mountain and Horse Heaven Hills. It´s a big wine that
will repay a few more years in your cellar, always one of the state´s finest.
I feel quite fortunate to have obtained enough for the club. We might be able to
get a bit more. It runs $34.50.
2003 Eleven Cabernet Sauvignon
What a shock - another new Washington winery! There´s
quite an essay on the back label; I´d recommend reading it after enjoying the
wine. The winery is based on Bainbridge Island; we also have a number of other
wines from them, all of good quality and excellent price. This one is $19.75,
and there´s plenty more. I´d recommend holding it two years or
decanting it if opened young.
2004 Marquis Philips Shiraz
This rich Shiraz from Southeast Australia is a perennial
crowd-pleaser - big, jammy and rich without sacrificing good balance. It´ll
go extremely well with roast meats and barbeque. There´s plenty more
available, and it´s ready to drink. It´s $15.00, quite a deal.
2001 Vin.Ca Vermentino
This wine comes from our friends at Small Vineyards Imports.
It was actually in our Specialty Club a few years back when it was first imported in
limited quantities. We were able to get what little is left for this club.
It now has a bit of age on it, and the nose shows it - mature cheese will go very well
with this one. It comes from Tuscany, and we´ve got it in the club for
$9.75. There´s a tiny amount left.
2002 Massane Vin de Pays d´Oc
This dark Syrah from the Languedoc is another nice example of
how easy it is to find good wines at great prices from the region. It is $9.75,
and there´s a good amount available. It´s ready to drink; try it
this summer on the patio.
NV Aliança Vinho Verde
Why haven´t I put Vinho Verde in this club before?
It´s a light, dry, somewhat acidic wine with a bit of fizz. It´s a
spectacular wine with shellfish and lighter fare. It comes from northern Portugal,
and is quite inexpensive--$7.00 in this case. There´s plenty around:
it´s basically bottled to order as needed to preserve the freshness of the
wine. Enjoy!
