June 2005 Collector´s Club
2000 Poderi Elia Barbaresco Serracapelli
Oh, is this one yummy! I tried this Barbaresco at a special tasting put on by our friend Josh
Hansen of Small Vineyards Imports, and promptly started figuring out ways to include this in the
club. The deal at the tasting was simple: those of us present ordered what we wanted, the
order was sent to Italy, a container was loaded and shipped - and that´s all of these wines
that we´re going to see. There are two more wines in this club from that container,
which arrived May 31st! This one is made in the Piedmont region of Northwest Italy from
the Nebbiolo grape, and while great now, will improve over the next five years. It´s
$49.75, and we have a bit more. By the way, a certain trade magazine that I don´t carry
gave this 93 points ...
2000 La Rose Metairie Haut-Medoc
Continuing in our recent tradition of $12.00 Bordeaux in the club, here´s a cheery cabernet
sauvignon-based red from a great vintage. It´ll hold another five years in your cellar,
and will drink well with decanting right now. We´ve got several cases left available,
along with last month´s Bordeaux.
2004 Forte Canto Negroamaro Salento Rosé
It´s definitely THAT time of year! This is another of the wines
from that container and, as with the other wines, supplies are limited. This one comes from
Southern Italy, and is made from the Negroamaro grape. Chill it down, and enjoy it with cold
cuts on the deck/beach/Green Lake/etc. It has a darker fruit profile than many rosés
that we try. This is one I´m planning on drinking myself this summer - after all, I did
order what I liked on that container!
2003 Villarroya de la Sierra Calatayud Garnacha
That´s a lot of typing for an $8.00 wine, no? "Still, I´ve
come to expect fun, enjoyable every-day drinking wines from this region (and importer - remember
Tres Ojos of a couple months back?) and this one certainly fits the bill. I´m fairly
certain that there´s a good supply of this around for summer drinking.
2004 Terre Gaie Bianco del Veneto
The last of the wines off the container, this zippy Northeastern Italian white is a blend of
Chardonnay, Riesling, and Incrocio Manzoni, which definitely is not something I see every day!
It´s a light, refreshing wine for $9.50 that´s fun to drink and ready to go.
2001 Chateau Simon Bordeaux Blanc
and, to round out this month, here´s a white Bordeaux made from Sauvignon Blanc.
It´s all of $7.50, and we´ve got a reasonable supply. Enjoy!
