December 2004 Collector´s Club
2000 Terre di Nano Barlettaia Chianti Colli Senesi
Here´s a nice treat - a Chianti from the region around Siena made from the
traditional Tuscan grape varietals of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia, and Trebbiano
(these last two being white grapes) instead of using French varietals to blend with
the Sangiovese. Our friends at Small Vineyards Imports came up with the wine,
and offered it to us and a few other outfits as a direct import. This means
there´s only enough for the club, which is sad as it´s pretty darn
special. Were it on the shelf it would be $25.00. Think roast lamb and
stinky cheeses. I always do. This will hold for up to five more years in
your cellar.
2000 Pegasus Bay Chardonnay
I´ll save you the trouble: yes, this is a repeat offender in the club.
We had the 1998 in once, and it proved so popular that when the opportunity came up
to pick this wine up at $22.00 instead of $28.00, we took it. It´s rich
and creamy on the palate, with loads of fruit. I keep saying New Zealand makes
spectacular Chardonnay. This is why. We´ve got about two cases
left. It´s ready to drink.
NV Bouvet Brut
Had to throw at least one good sparkler in for New Years, no? This Loire Valley
wine will help you celebrate the holiday in style and, at $11.00, affordably as
well. There´s lots of it around, and it does surprisingly well in the
cellar for a couple years!
2003 Syncline Subduction Red
Yep, another repeat offender. One of these days winemaker James Mantone will
make a mistake. This isn´t it. It´s $15.75, and the winery
is sold out. We´ve got a bit left, and that´s it. It´s
Grenache based, and a delightful quaffer, albeit somewhat more powerful than in years
past.
2001 Wildhurst Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Franc
I grabbed the last few cases of this one for the ridiculously low price of $9.50
each. It hails from Lake County, California, a lesser-known growing region.
Good, though - this will keep in your cellar for a couple more years, or you
can have it at the Christmas party you were throwing.
NV Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Manzanilla
Have I actually done this club for five years without ever throwing in a Sherry?
(for that matter, have I actually been doing this for five years?)
This bone-dry, lightly salty Manzanilla is an excellent accompaniment to hors
d´oeuvres. Serve slightly chilled. There´s plenty of it left
at $11.00. Drink this young - like most dry sherries, it´s far better
when fresh.
