July 2004 Collector´s Club
1998 Tre Donne Selezione Donna Nera Barolo
The "Three Women" (Tre Donne) in the name of this wine has quite a story
behind it, and importer (and good friend of West Seattle Cellars) Josh Hanson never
tires of telling it: how the father, a vintner, was desperate to leave his winery to
a son, and all (all?) he had were three daughters, who became understandably annoyed
at his rather old-fashioned (to say the least!) attitude. They did indeed take
it over, and are making world-class wines. I met one of the sisters, Rosanna,
on my recent trip to Italy. Colorful would be an understatement. She may
well be here early next year, and that´s a tasting I´d advise you not to
miss! This wine is, alas, gone. It was $40.00, and will hold for another
five years at least in your cellar - or you can decant it and drink it young.
2003 Penny´s Hill Red Dot Shiraz
Zounds! Another shot across the bow in the wine bottle closure war! This
outstanding Aussie is sealed by something known as a "Zork."
It´s a nice compromise between a cork and a screwcap, and an ideal stopper for
an enjoyable, rich Shiraz at a great price - $18.00. There´s a
reasonable amount left, although with a more standard cork! This one´s
ready to drink, and it´ll make a good accompaniment to summer barbeque fare.
2000 Domaine Ste-Anne Cotes-Du-Rhone Villages Cuvee
Notre-Dame des Celletes
This special cuvee from a great producer has been one of our top sellers since we
featured it at a tasting here in early June. It´s truly an outstanding
wine, and, at only $15.00, an outstanding value. You can cellar it for another
five years, you can drink it now; either way, this 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10%
Mourvedre wine will please. It´ll hold up to spicier foods (I´m
having it with barbeque salmon the weekend I´m writing this), and is just
fine by itself as well. There´s no shortage.
2001 Finca Casas Beaux Malbec
Yet another good Argentine value, this from the La Rioja region. There´s
a reasonable amount, and it´s only $5.00!
2003 Ninet de Pena vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes
Rosé
This wine comes from the French-Spanish border, close to the Mediterranean Sea, and
is based on Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignage. It´s light and lively,
and is very available and, at $8.50, affordable.
2003 Domaine des Cassagnoles Vin de Pays des Cotes de
Gascogne
Here´s a nice, light wine for summer quaffing. It´s been a favorite
for a couple years now. Try it with grilled white fish or shrimp; also,
it´ll go well with Asian cooking and spicier fare. It´s $7.00, and
it tends to come and go. Right now, it´s in good supply. Enjoy!
We´re running into a few permit issues with the City on the new shop;
nothing that can´t be resolved, but it is delaying it a bit! More soon.
