April 2004 Collector´s Club
2002 Martorana Nero d´Avola Sicilia
Here´s another monster from our friend Josh Hanson at Small Vineyards Imports.
It´s a powerhouse of a Nero d´Avola (the great grape of Sicily).
It´s probably the most immense wine I´ve ever had from this region;
dark, figgy fruit with tremendous concentration and power. It´s ready to
drink. There´s tiny amounts of this available - heck, there´s tiny
amounts of this made - and it´s $19.75.
2000 Chappallet Vineyards Mountain Cuvee Cabernet
Sauvignon
It´s so nice to see a high-quality California Cabernet at a reasonable price!
This wine´s all of $19.75, and is a wonderful bargain, as the wine has
great Cab flavor and staying power. These folks have always been dependable,
and were one of the first to react to the changing wine market by dropping the prices
on many of their wines. It´s nice to support them. There´s a
good supply.
1999 Feraud - Brunel Chateauneuf-du-Pape
For a while, I was putting a fair amount of Chateauneufs into the wine club; they
were outstanding wines from great years, and great bargains as well.
We´ve tailed off in recent months as the prices have spiraled in the wrong
direction, so it´s quite a relief to offer this outstanding wine made by the
collaboration of two great winemakers (Andre Brunel of Les Cailloux fame, and
Laurence Feraud of Domaine du Pegau) at the unbelievable price of $22.00.
There´s a reasonable quantity, and the wine will hold for up to ten years,
although it´s really delicious right now. Try it with game.
1999 Pinord Clos de Torribas Tempranillo
This wine comes from the Penedes region of Spain, and is made from the Tempranillo
grape, which makes wines of great, earthy complexity without sacrificing a nice,
food-friendly lightness on the palate. This wine will go well with most
anything from hamburgers to steak, and is ready to drink. It´s sadly sold
out as well. It was $8.50.
2000 Jepson Sauvignon Blanc
I´ve always liked this Mendocino County winery. They make excellent
quality wines (and brandy, if you can find it). Sadly, no one else seems to
know about them, and their current distributor is closing them out. While it
means we won´t be getting more, at least what we do have is very reasonably
priced at $9.50. I´ll work on getting them a new distributor.
2003 Neil Ellis Sincerely Sauvignon Blanc
Most who know me realize that I have an unfortunate weakness for puns. It
rarely shows up here - until now. This label looks-exactly-like a famous
Sancerre producer´s label. It also tastes rather a lot like one. At
a fraction of the price; it´s $11.00. I´ve noticed that South
Africa has been producing more and better wines, and you´ll be seeing more of
them in the club. Obviously, this is one region that will have a much larger
section in the new shop!
