CLUB WRITEUPS

January 2004 Collector´s Club

2002 Rulo Silo Syrah
Our good friend Kurt Schlicker is an unusual winemaker.  He keeps his prices well in line, and makes spectacular wines that get overlooked all too often.   This is his first reserve Syrah and, at $25.00, it´s a bargain.  His regular Syrah is still $18.00, and it´s also a bargain.  There´s a good amount of these food-friendly wines available, for once.  Try this with a rib roast or venison.  It´ll hold nicely in your cellar for up to five years too.

2001 Onyx Kroon
This South African wine knocked me out when I tried it last month.  It´s a blend of half Pinotage (itself a genetic cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir) and half Shiraz, a style of blending that´s becoming known as a Cape Blend.   It´s $20.75, and there´s a good supply of this rich, supple wine.   It will hold well for five years in your cellar, or will go quite nicely with oxtail stew (I just tried it that way...).

2001 Cloudy Bay Marlborough Chardonnay
You´ve probably heard of the Sauvignon Blanc by these folks; the Chardonnay is just as spectacular.  Nice rich Chardonnay fruit is framed by outstanding acidity, making a food-friendly, not overblown wine.  It´ll go quite nicely with halibut or herbed chicken.  There´s a reasonable quantity of this available at $25.00, and there´ll be a small amount of the Sauvignon Blanc at $26.00 as well - although I´d hurry on the latter!

2001 Abrigo Giovanni Dolcetto di Diano d´Alba
It´s nice to get a varietal into the club that we don´t see all that often; it´s even nicer when it´s this good, and it´s nicest when I can get ‘em at a bargain price.  This winner´s $14.00.  The drawback is that there´s no more to be had.  Pity - it´s remarkably good.  Try with your pick of red Italian dishes.

2002 Syncline Subduction Red
James Mantone did it again this year, keeping his string of club wines intact.   This lighter-style red is a lovely blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grenache, and will go well with chicken, pork or red meat dishes.  There´s a good supply - at the moment!

2000 Les Jamelles Sauvignon Blanc
This is a nice, easy-drinking white that we used to retail for $7.00 - until the distributor closed it out, to our annoyance - this being one of our favorite catering wines.  We bought all that was left, and now have it at $5.00 until it´s gone.  Good southern French wine!

Be sure to sign up for our new, revamped mailing list!  We´ll keep you up-to-date on the latest goodies and on the progress of our new shop!
