June 2003 Collector´s Club
1998 Antonio Sanguinetti Brunello di
Montalcino
This one´s a powerhouse of a wine. It´s made from a
clone of the Sangiovese grape in one of Tuscany´s most renowned
regions, and it´s absolutely delicious. This will hold in
your cellar for up to ten years, although it´s great right now
as well. Serve it with your favorite Italian red meat dish.
There´s good supply at $35.00, cheap for Brunello.
2000 Domaine la Berangeraie Cuvée
Marlène Cahors
This wine comes from south central France, just up-river from
Bordeaux, and is made from the Malbec grape. If you wish to
consume this one young, PLEASE decant it! It´s very "
tight" right now. Should you choose to put this away in
your cellar for some time, say, ten years, decanting will be less
necessary, but still prudent! It´s a powerfully flavored
wine. There´s plenty available at $13.00.
2001 Eric Texier Côtes du
Rhône-Villages Chusclan
Eric Texier is one of a rare breed - a negociant who makes spectacular
wines across his entire product line (negociants are those French
winemakers who buy their grapes instead of owning the land).
This $17.00 gem is a spectacular example of why I like southern
Rhône wines; rich, supple texture, great fruit, and outstanding
balance. The wine comes from the commune of Chusclan; hence the
name. There´s good availability.
2001 Bergevin Lane Vineyards Mosaic Red
Yarrgh! Another new Walla Walla winery! That was my
reaction when these folks called me and asked if I wanted to try their
wine. I´m a fan of the region - but there´s more
than 50 of ´em now. What could one more offer? How
about value? This wine is $15.00. How about rich flavor?
This stylish blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and
Zinfandel (and plenty of new oak) packs a wallop. And
they´re nice people. An easy choice for the club!
2000 Rosa del Golfo Rosato
This lovely rose from Palermo is an ideal summer patio pleaser; try it
outside with a cold cut platter. It´s $7.00, and
there´s about three cases in stock. When that´s
gone, we might be able to get the next vintage in, but it´ll be
a bit pricier.
2001 Willow Crest Pinot Gris Yakima Valley
Another outstanding value from Washington! This wine is all of
$7.00, and it is a pleasing, refreshing drink. Chill it down and
have fun! There´s plenty around.
